I was walking through the park part of the National Reserve here at Fort Vancouver and spotted this tree I have probably seen thousands of times. I think it is odd the way those branches grow straight up from the one pointing to the right. Maybe it seems natural to others but then why do branches spread away from the trunk and some grow like these: straight up?

I was trying my macro setting on camera again and for lack of some early spring flowers, I spotted this stuff in a tree. I am not sure what it is. Maybe someone will inform me and I can change the title of the post to match. . . I thought it was pretty anyway.
